GPS, Maps Driving Directions 1.0.37

Keep the network, skip the downloads

Since Google maps started looking like a GPS navigation system, there has been a huge dilemma. Navigate with your phone, but keep your data connection on and suffer potentially big charges or invest into a dedicated navigation system and forget about any interactivity, check ins and other groovy features.

BeOnRoad Navigation

Well, you can still forget about cool features but here's the thing. As long as you have enough storage space on your device, you can use BeOnRoad as a fully fledged navigation system.

BeOnRoad allows you to download any navigation map from the OpenStreetMaps Foundation - openstreetmap.org. These maps include points of interests (POI) which are also accessible in BeOnRoad. There is a POI filter list in which you can designate what should be visible.

As a navigator, there are voices available for download in many languages, along with a some TTS (text to speech) languages but with more voice variety.

You can set the navigation to adapt to a vehicle or a pedestrian route. Of course, traversing the town or countryside implies a constantly changing light environment. BeOnRoad uses the device sensor and changes the visual theme between light and dark accordingly.

Features

  • Navigation with voice
  • Mapped POI
  • 3D Maps
  • Speed limit warnings

Pros

  • Free maps
  • Offline navigation
  • Big buttons
  • Suitable for pedestrian routes

Conclusion

Although there are some minor glitches on the navigation part, BeOnRoad does its job fairly well. Finally, only the individual can decide if this app is useful or not.
